Editing

Why do you need an editor?

Think of an editor as a mirror: someone who reflects your writing back at you, so you can see it more clearly. The process considers elements such as plot and pacing, tone and style, and works with the writer’s individual voice. An editor can help you say what you already mean, and where appropriate, with more clarity and impact. Publishers will also adjust books to make them more saleable, and identify potential issues.

You stay in control: every suggested development or alternative can be accepted, rejected or adapted. Editing is a collaboration, not a takeover.

What are my options?

I put this service together after noticing how many great ideas never move beyond early drafts, or are stuck in a loop of redrafting and refining without knowledge of editorial processes.

Most writers aren’t short on information — what’s often missing is some structure, steady support, and a clearer sense of direction.

You might have started your book and then found yourself unsure how it’s shaping up, daunted by the editing or publishing side, or simply uncertain about what comes next.

That’s a common place to pause — and it’s also where the right kind of support can help you move forward again.

You will receive:

  • a 45-minute video or audio consultation
Perfect if you want clear direction before committing to deeper editing.

Cost: from £175.

Developmental (structural) edit

This in-depth edit focuses on the overall structure and storytelling of your book. We consider many aspects including characterisation and dialogue; voice, tone and style; and plot and pacing.

You will receive:

  • annotated comments throughout your manuscript
  • a 1500-word editorial report with practical guidance
  • a 60-minute video or audio consultation

Cost: from £450.

Ideal for writers who are looking for detailed knowledge of their work that enables in-depth feedback, with the option of support in approaching the options. If you have an initial draft of your book, or are looping through revisions, a developmental edit will enable you to focus with immediate practical steps towards completion.

Line edit

Where appropriate, and while preserving the writer’s unique voice, a line edit aims to make each sentence clear, engaging, and polished.

Moving beyond simple grammar correction, it identifies overwriting, redundant words, and confusing, awkward, or flat phrasing. With thoughtful, creative attention, it enhances flow and pacing, sharpens word choice, and ensures consistency in tone (how the writing feels) and style (the way you write).

You’ll receive:

  • suggested edits directly applied to your manuscript (to accept, delete or amend)
  • annotations where needed

Cost: from £650.

Best for writers who want to consider how the manuscript could be sharper or more engaging. A line edit is used by literary agents and editors to polish a manuscript, ready for a proofread and the design process.

Copy edit

Appropriate for non-fiction, copy editing attends to grammar, spelling, and punctuation issues, but considers style and consistency.

It will highlight awkward or unclear phrasing, and any factual or continuity errors.

You will receive:

  • suggested edits directly in your manuscript
  • annotations where needed.

Cost: from £450.

Proofreading

Proofreading is a final quality check before publication. It catches surface errors only and does not involve rewriting.

We check for:

  • typographical and spelling errors
  • grammar and punctuation issues
  • formatting and typesetting mistakes.

You’ll receive:

  • a marked-up fully-proofed copy of your manuscript, and a clean version with all changes incorporated.

Cost: from £350.

Essential before printing or publishing.

Sub-editing (news, features and online content)

For journalism and digital content, we refine your copy to fit word counts and house style while keeping your message strong. It cuts or reshapes text, adds headlines, standfirsts and subheadings, to guide the reader through the story in an accessible way.

You’ll receive:

  • a marked-up subbed copy of your content, and a clean version with all changes incorporated ready for publication

Cost: according to word count, £90 for a 1500-word feature.

Great for articles, bloggers, and content creators.

Design of book cover

Cost: from £195.

Writing journeys – some examples…

The completed draft

Tom had been working on a novel set in a fantasy world which he began writing as a teenager, and wanted to explore its potential. A developmental edit report looked at the dynamics of the story:

  • the structure of the story, outlining and investigating the framework
  • the emotional movement of the characters, their significance and relationship to others
  • the flow of conflict, and the tensions which could be explored further
  • the setting of the fantasy universe and its mechanisms (e.g. the function of magical elements) and how it might fit within the genre.

The processed manuscript

Sarah had invested in her novel over several years, with writing courses, an independent editor and a literary agent. She now wanted to put the novel in print and move on to her next book.

A line edit read-through enabled a thorough overview of the novel in its final form, a review of the author’s thoughts on various scenes and dealt with remaining adjustments to the manuscript.

We discussed Sarah’s initial ideas for the tone of the cover and presented options for a concept, commissioned an illustration, and prepared blurbs and taglines. The book interior was designed and formatted, and self-published via Amazon in paperback and e-book or Kindle format.

The illustrated memoir

John had been working on a life memoir to share with friends and family, at home and abroad, for a milestone reunion.

There were many photographs and illustrations to incorporate, so we created a bespoke large-format glossy paperback, edited the photography and produced a flexible layout to allow the pictures to tell the story.

We modelled options for a cover and did a cost-effective limited print run of the bespoke design through an independent printer. The author used the book as a focus for his landmark celebration with friends and family.
